Chapter 10

Prianna’s voice cut through the chill air.

“What is the meaning of this?” the half-moon elf demanded. Her voice had a note of steel in it that was at once ferocious and sexy.

“Routine patrol, ma’am,” Hardwick’s voice responded.

I was pleased to hear a slight undercurrent of fear in his words.

“Why are cadets running a patrol without senior soldiers?” Prianna asked.

“Can’t spare them, ma’am,” another voice piped up. This one sounded incredibly young and female.

“Mmm,” Prianna said, and she conveyed a whole world of meaning in that simple tone. “Where are they?”

“On other business,” Merrel said. His voice was curt but respectful.

“Did you not see the Legion heraldry on the carriage, Hardwick?”

“Ma’am,” the cadet said.

I couldn’t decide if that was confirmation that he hadn’t seen the insignias emblazoned on the side of the vehicles, or if he had seen them and simply didn’t care.

Perhaps he was trying to show off for his friends. That would be exactly like Merrel.

Whoever thought an asshat like him should be leading a patrol was even more of a dipshit than he was.

“Were the patrols not informed to expect us?” the Sergeant asked.

No answer was forthcoming, and I knew she’d managed to call Merrel out.

I wasn’t sure what his plan had been, but from the lack of response, I figured being rebuked by a Legion soldier had hurt his pride a bit, even one who technically wouldn’t have much authority over a cadet from the Arbor School.

“Can we continue?” Prianna said pointedly.

“We need to check the carriages,” Merrel said.

She knew my history with Hardwick– after all, who didn’t?– and so I appreciated her effort as she tried to stop the dark elf from opening our carriage door.

“There’s no need for that, Hardwick,” the Sergeant said.

“Ma’am, with all due respect,” Merrel said, though his tone was anything but respectful, “I am the one responsible for the safety of my school’s cadets and for the Arbor School itself.”

“Sounds like a stretch,” Prianna snorted. “But by all means, have your moment.”

Kerym and Gerrin snickered painfully loud, but then the carriage door was wrenched open, and I found myself staring into Merrel’s red eyes.

I didn’t want to embarrass myself or Efasia, so I greeted him with civility.

“Hey, man.” I grinned nonchalantly. “Long time.”

His eyes flared briefly, but he played it off as quickly as could be expected. He also chose not to respond.

He was clearly annoyed at my lack of reaction to him suddenly barging in, and he focused on looking around the carriage. He was obviously trying to find something wrong, but instead, he found Efasia staring at him from the shadowy corner.

She looked like a python ready to strike as her yellow eyes betrayed no emotion, and the guy actually jumped back in either fear or surprise.

“Efasia!” he said, and his voice cracked.

Jas wheezed in the effort to hide his laughter.

“Merrel,” was all Efasia said in greeting.

“Who’s Efasia?” I heard the very young female cadet outside demand.

Efasia cocked an eyebrow, and I could’ve sworn I saw Merrel’s soul shrivel and die.
